GANDHI OLD AGE HOME AS A QUALITY OF LIFE

India has been a country where joint families are still the norm and not an exception, but due to the social transformations in the recent years, senior citizens are facing a lot of problems. Lifestyles have changed, some for the better and few with negative consequences. Although the younger generations are reaping the benefits of this new lifestyle, the senior citizens constantly feel neglected and isolated. A 2015-16 AISCCON survey shows that 39 percent of elederly people are abandoned by their families or they live alone. This calls for a good number of old age homes with great facilities.

Gandhi old age home is one such organisation situated in kadabagere Cross and was established in the year 2001-2002 By Founder secretary Ugraiah.C, Registered with Physically Handicapped & Senior Citizens Welfare Department, Govt of Karnataka. At present there are nearly 150 inmates at the old age home. Some are Bed Ridden, Physically, Visually or Mentally Handicapped.

Gandhi Old Age home provides free food, shelter and medicines. A Physician visits the old age home every week and the nurses make sure that the elderly are staying in good health. Infact, the activities held in the old age home are financially supported by Terapanth Youvak Parishath, a trust fund situated in Vijaynagar, bengaluru. Several other charitable trusts, general public and Committee members of Gandhi Education Society also play a major role in keeping the organisation running.

"It is sad to note that so many elderly peoples lives are full of misery and grief. They are not getting basic facilities like food, clothes and shelter. Therefore after deep thought, Gandhi Education Society decided to establish Gandhi Old Age Home for the deserving senior citizens who are in distress due to many unforeseen reasons." said Ugraiah.C who has been the Founder Secretary of Gandhi Old Age Home for nearly 20 years now.

It is also important to note that Gandhi Old Age Home does not take elderly people with diseases as it might affect the health of other inmates. But the eligible elderly people are welcome to live at the old age home, where they need not pay for admission into the house. What makes Gandhi Old Age Home even more special is the fact that it is situated in a very peaceful area with good environment, away from Bengaluru's deafening noise levels. It also has a great community of elder citizens who all come together, helping each other feel less isolated and more at home.
