He arrived at The Hindu college as a student two years after Derozio departed from it, but came to imbibe many of the same ideas that Derozio had tried to take to his students.

Dutt's chief inspiration for his early writing was drawn from Captain Richardson, one of the teachers of The Hindu college. With his encouragement, Dutt came into contact with several literary journals like -- The Bengal Spectator, Calcutta Literary Gazzete, Comet etc.

Incidentally, Derozio was the first and Dutt the second Indian English writer to write in sonnet form, which was favourite with the poets of England.

Dutt was inspired by both the life and works of the English Romantic poets Lord Byron. Like Byron, Dutt was a spirited bohemian and a Romantic, albeit being born on the other side of the world!

Madhusudan began writing while at Hindu College. He drew everyone's attention at a college function when he recited a self composed poem.

Despite penning down several sonnets he also wrote longer poems like- The Captive Ladie, Visions of the past.

Madhusudan's contribution to the field of Bangla literature was truly immense. He is often rated as one of the greatest poets between Bharatchandra Ray and Rabindranath Tagore. He introduced blank verse, modern commedy and tragedy and epic style into bangla poetry and play. He is also regarded as the pioneer of westernised poetry and the new drama.

His masterpiece Meghnadhbadh Kavya still stands out in the realm of literature for freeing Bangla poetry from the limitations of rhymed verse.
